Searching the San Juan County Court Docket
Start your San Juan County docket search by knowing which court you need. Superior Court handles the general-jurisdiction trial docket. Its current public portal is the Odyssey Portal for the Superior Court of Washington, San Juan County. For other routes, try the Washington Courts Case Records Search, Find My Court Date, and re:SearchWA. These cover statewide and limited-jurisdiction queries. District Court stands as the fallback for its own case information.
Before you type anything, gather your materials. You will want a party name, the rough filing year, the court level, and a case number if you have one. Odyssey wants names in “Last, First Middle” order. The search is not case-sensitive. A trailing wildcard widens a partial name. Filters for a date range, case type, status, judicial officer, or San Juan County location narrow the results.
- Choose Superior Court or District Court based on the case type.
- Open the matching official search and enter a case number or party name.
- Limit the location to San Juan County and add useful filters.
- Read Case Information, Events, Hearings, Disposition Events, and the Register of Actions.
- Ask the responsible clerk for a specific document or certified copy when needed.
San Juan County Odyssey Docket Search
Odyssey Smart Search is the fastest way into a San Juan County Superior Court docket. The portal asks for a case number or a name, plus a robot check. Advanced options let you pick San Juan County first. Then choose the search type, case type, status, filing dates, and judicial officer. Sorting is available too. Results can be ordered by case number, file date, type, location, or party name.
| Search field | Use | Format or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Search | Party or case | “Last, First Middle” or case number |
| County location | Local results | Select San Juan County |
| Case type/status | Narrow results | Values depend on the live portal |
| File dates | Limit broad matches | Start and end dates |
| Search Hearings | Find settings | Case, party, attorney, judge, or courtroom |
For a non-confidential Superior case, Odyssey may attach a public document link. An event can appear with no document linked. In that case, jot down its title and date for a County Clerk request. One caution applies to common names. Searches can return only the first 200 matches. Hyphenated names may need a second try without punctuation.
Inside a San Juan County Court Docket
Think of a docket as a case's chronological map. Washington GR 31 draws the definition widely. Indexes, calendars, dockets, registers of actions, orders, judgments, minutes, and case-management information all count as “court record.” Odyssey labels its event history the Register of Actions. That list tracks what was filed, scheduled, entered, or decided. It does not always include the paper behind an event. A missing document there means nothing was lost.
| Case number | The court-assigned identifier used to find and request the file. |
|---|---|
| Case and parties | The category, caption, and public party roles. |
| Register entries | Dated filings, notices, motions, orders, and other events. |
| Hearing settings | Date, time, courtroom, judge, and proceeding type. |
| Disposition | The recorded outcome, judgment, dismissal, plea, or closure event. |
| Access status | Public link, restricted marker, sealed entry, or omitted detail. |
Read from the header down to the newest register entry. Then compare the Hearings and Disposition sections against each other. An old hearing can linger on view even after a reset, so treat a listed date as scheduling information rather than a result. A portal entry is reference information, not a certified record; the court office holding the original file supplies authenticated copies.
San Juan County Docket Number Codes
Washington Superior case numbers have a pattern. They usually run year, case type, sequence, then a final check or county code. A local calendar example is 26-2-05070-28. The first pair gives the filing year. The third digit marks the case category. One quirk: Odyssey counties can end the number with a county code. This replaces the older check digit.
- 1
- Criminal case type.
- 2
- Civil case type.
- 3
- Domestic case type.
- 4
- Probate or guardianship case type.
- 7 and 8
- Juvenile dependency and offender types, with public access limits.
- 9
- Judgment case type.
District and municipal numbers follow their own court-specific formats. San Juan County payment instructions show A- and Z-style lower-court numbers, plus a possible P prefix for parking matters. Don't force a lower-court number into the Superior pattern. Keep every digit intact, and name the issuing court when you ask staff for a file.
Courts That Keep Dockets in San Juan County
San Juan County centralizes court services in Friday Harbor. Docket custody splits by court level. Superior Court holds general trial jurisdiction. District Court is a court of limited jurisdiction. Friday Harbor municipal matters route through District Court rather than a separately listed municipal courthouse. Appeals from Superior Court go to the Washington State Court of Appeals, Division One. The Washington Supreme Court can take the case further on review.
| Court | Docket covers | Where to search |
|---|---|---|
| San Juan County Superior Court | Felonies; civil over $100,000; family; title; probate; guardianship; juvenile; appeals | Odyssey and County Clerk |
| San Juan County District Court | Misdemeanors; infractions; parking; civil up to $100,000; small claims; protection orders; name changes | Statewide tools, re:SearchWA, District Court |
| Friday Harbor Municipal Court | Municipal matters and Town parking routing | See San Juan County District Court |
| Court of Appeals, Division One | Appeals from San Juan Superior Court | Washington appellate records |
The routing rule is simple. A felony, family, probate, title, juvenile, dependency, or higher-value civil case belongs to Superior Court. A misdemeanor, infraction, parking matter, small claim, name change, or civil case within District Court's published limit belongs to District Court.
San Juan County Courthouse Docket Hub
The county's official courthouse security page details the building that serves as San Juan County's physical docket hub.
The courthouse on the National Register of Historic Places still holds the County Clerk, Superior Court, District Court, the prosecutor, the sheriff, juvenile services, and other offices. That matters for a docket search. Whatever appears online traces back to a real file kept inside this building.
Head to the second floor at 350 Court Street, Friday Harbor, WA 98250. Both the County Clerk and District Court counters sit there, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a noon to 1 p.m. closure. A public-access computer at the Clerk's counter gives free Superior file viewing from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., again paused over lunch.
No docket annex or public branch exists on Orcas, Lopez, or Shaw. In an island county, online, phone, e-mail, and mail routes do the work that a drive would do elsewhere. Always confirm a record or hearing before you book a ferry.
How to Find Court Dates and Settings
Superior cases start with Odyssey Search Hearings and the case's Hearings or Register of Actions tab. Search Hearings lets you filter by location, hearing type, and date range. You can also add a case number, party, business, attorney, judicial officer, or courtroom. Check any result against the San Juan County Court Calendar, which posts daily Superior docket blocks and upcoming calendar files.
The local schedule covers Adult Criminal, Criminal Law and Motion, protection orders, Civil Law and Motion, special sets, trials, in-custody hearings, dependency, juvenile, Drug Court, and Family Treatment Court. Special sets go through Superior Court Administration. A treatment-team staff meeting is not a public hearing just because a related court block is listed.
One caution about resets. A continuance can leave the first setting sitting in the register. Trust the newest future event. Confirm it by phone. Superior Court Administration is (360) 370-7480, the County Clerk is (360) 378-2163, and District Court is (360) 378-4017. The full San Juan County court dates path walks through these calendar layers in more detail.
San Juan County Docket Portal Limits
Treat the statewide search as a locator, not the official San Juan County court docket. It refreshes about every 24 hours. The update usually lands at 3 a.m. It warns users that status, docket, judgment, and document links may be incomplete or wrong. Some material simply never shows up. Restricted case types, sealed cases, pre-JIS matters, and older non-standard numbers can all be missing, and re:SearchWA occasionally goes down.
A blank result is not the end of the road. Check spelling and punctuation first. Try a case number, narrow the court level, and call the office that would hold the case. Remember, though, that a missing result does not prove a matter never existed. For a current hearing or an outcome, read the latest case entry. Confirm it directly with the court.
Fast fallback: Online index → Odyssey or re:SearchWA → public computer → clerk phone or e-mail → written request or courthouse counter.
Public Access to Court Dockets
Washington law treats court records differently from ordinary county administrative records. A San Juan County case docket sits under the court rules, chiefly GR 31. The Public Records Act, RCW 42.56, governs county administrative material. Use it for that. It is not the way to demand a pleading, judgment, or docket. Judicial administrative records follow a separate GR 31.1 process.
Key Rules:
Washington GR 31 presumes court-record access and bars a fee merely to view a record at the courthouse.
Washington GR 15 governs sealing, redaction, destruction, filler sheets, and unsealing.
Washington GR 22 limits access to specified family, protection-order, guardianship, health, financial, and treatment records.
Washington GR 30 governs electronic filing, confirmation, filing time, rejection, and signatures.
Sealing does not always make a case vanish. A sealed case can leave a limited notation in the public index. A sealed document may keep its title and date on the docket, and a filler sheet stands in for the image. Protected personal identifiers get redacted. So when a portal omits something, ask the clerk about access instead of assuming the whole case is closed.
San Juan County Docket Filing Goes Digital
San Juan County moved Superior Court filings to eFileWA in the documented July 2024 transition. Attorneys must file through eFileWA. Self-represented filers are encouraged to use it but not required. The platform takes submissions around the clock. Local filing hours run 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific. Anything received after that cutoff gets processed the next court day.
Keep the channel and the docket separate. E-filing just delivers papers to the clerk; it is not the public docket itself. Once accepted, a filing can become a register event. It may also appear as a linked document when public and supported by the portal. There is no eFileWA platform fee. Statutory charges and a 2.89 percent payment transaction fee may still apply.
Not everything fits the electronic pipe. Hearing exhibits, original wills, certified appeal records, and negotiable instruments stay on paper. New criminal cases are excluded too. So are foreign-government documents under official seal. Those exceptions explain why a modern docket still leans on counter, mail, and paper procedures.
Docket Records at the Clerk's Office
Two offices keep the San Juan County docket. The San Juan County Clerk / Clerk of the Superior Court holds Superior criminal, civil, family, probate, guardianship, juvenile, dependency, protection-order, and appeal files. The District Court records office keeps lower-court criminal, infraction, parking, civil, small-claims, protection-order, and name-change records.
Superior files can be reached several ways. Odyssey and the free public computer cover searches, and the counter handles walk-ins. A written document request can go by e-mail, mail, or delivery, and it must identify the case number, case name, and the specific file wanted. Staff calculates the fee and releases copies once payment lands. A phone call can clarify the route, but the County Clerk does not take copy requests by phone. District Court works differently, with its own written form and support for counter, phone, e-mail, mail, and form-based requests.

San Juan County Docket Copy Choices
Looking and copying are two different things. Courthouse viewing is free. A plain or e-mailed copy simply reproduces the file, while a certified copy carries the clerk's authentication. Hearing audio is a separate product, and a transcript generally comes through a reporter or authorized transcription process rather than a basic docket request.
| Service | Superior Court source | District Court source |
|---|---|---|
| View | No fee at public computer | No fee to inspect |
| Plain copy | $0.50 per page | Form says $0.15 per page; fee page says $0.10, so confirm |
| Certified copy | $5 first page plus $1 each added page | Request form lists $5 per document |
| Court audio | $25 per hearing link | $20 per CD |
| Record research | $20 per hour listed for court records | $20 per hour |
The official county materials give two conflicting District Court copy lines. Confirm the current charge before you send payment. Ask for certification only if an official recipient truly requires it. Often a free docket entry is enough. Use it to locate the right judgment or order before placing the request.
San Juan County Docket Outage Fallback
San Juan County’s 2024 technology outage taught a lasting docket lesson. When statewide systems went down, the Superior and District Court offices kept working. Staff took paper filings and payments in person. They handled emergencies, scheduled hearings, and let people view physical records at the courthouse. The county says everything was brought current within three days after restoration.
That fallback matters twice as much on an island. Write down your case number and confirm which court you need. Call before you make the trip. Send copy requests by e-mail or mail when you can. Portals, payment services, and e-filing systems can go dark. The courthouse record itself is still there.
San Juan County Treatment Dockets
The San Juan County Superior calendar blends routine criminal and civil matters. Named problem-solving dockets sit alongside them. Drug Court, Therapeutic Court, and Family Treatment Court hearings show up as calendar blocks. Each block links to an underlying case number. Family Treatment Court launched with an active caseload. That followed multi-year, multi-agency planning, according to the 2024 County Year-in-Review.
A hearing label on the public calendar does not unlock everything, though. Local rules split court hearings from staff meetings. GR 22 lets the court seal treatment evaluations, reports, health information, and similar confidential material. Take the date and courtroom from the case’s public hearing entry. Then follow whatever instructions the court gives about participation or access.
San Juan County Court Dockets by City
Friday Harbor is the county seat and San Juan County’s only incorporated town. The 2020 Census put its population at 2,613. County planning materials list Eastsound and Lopez Village as population centers, not municipalities. Neither supports its own city docket page.
The Washington Court Directory says “Friday Harbor: See San Juan County District Court.” That is the whole routing story. Friday Harbor writes the town parking rules. It starts enforcement. Payments, disputes, and the court record all run through District Court. Town Hall will not have your case file. Remember that split and you know where any San Juan County municipal docket matter belongs.

A Friday Harbor parking ticket gives you four ways to pay District Court: in person, by mail, through the courthouse drop box, or by the District Court payment route. To fight it, file the local parking mitigation form. A District Court judge then decides the dispute.
Map and Directions to the San Juan County Courthouse
Superior Court's felony, family, probate, guardianship, and juvenile dockets are filed with the County Clerk on the second floor of the San Juan County Courthouse, 350 Court Street in Friday Harbor. District Court, which keeps the misdemeanor, infraction, parking, small-claims, and Friday Harbor municipal docket, is on the same second floor of the same building. Because San Juan County has no branch courthouse on Orcas, Lopez, or Shaw, this Friday Harbor building is the only in-person counter for a county case record.
