San Juan County Traffic Court Records
San Juan County District Court handles traffic, non-traffic, and parking infractions. Its records office keeps the lower-court case file. No separate traffic court is listed for Orcas, Lopez, Shaw, Eastsound, or Lopez Village.
Friday Harbor is the county's only incorporated town, but the state directory routes its municipal docket to San Juan County District Court. A traffic court record may show the citation, response, hearing, disposition, fine, deferred finding, and later orders. The county publishes no stand-alone citation search form, so state tools and direct court contact form the search chain.
Friday Harbor Traffic Ticket Routing
A Town parking ticket does not create a separate city court counter. The Friday Harbor parking page sends payments and disputes to District Court. Town Hall handles parking rules and enforcement questions, while the judge and court record remain with the county court.
The official routing appears in this Town parking source.
The distinction keeps a ticket holder from asking Town Hall to certify a District Court record.
Looking Up a Traffic Ticket
Begin with the citation. It supplies the number and first response or appearance date before a new San Juan County traffic record reaches an online index. Washington Case Records and Find My Court Date cover lower courts. re:SearchWA is the listed limited-jurisdiction portal where available. Neither replaces the court file.
- Read the ticket for its citation number, issuing agency, and response date.
- Use Washington Case Records or Find My Court Date and choose San Juan County District Court.
- Try re:SearchWA, but do not treat an outage or blank result as proof that no case exists.
- Call (360) 378-4017, email districtcourt@sanjuancountywa.gov, or visit the second-floor counter at 350 Court Street.
- For a copy, submit the District Court form by its documented counter, mail, email, or form route.
District Court mail goes to P.O. Box 127, Friday Harbor, WA 98250. Forms also state fax routes where applicable. Include the citation number whenever possible.
San Juan Citation Number Rules
The county payment instructions document forms such as #Z####### and #A#######. For ACI payment, remove the leading digit so the entry begins with Z or A. Parking may require a P prefix. These are payment-entry rules, not proof of the full docket number.
- Jurisdiction code 10072
- The ACI code for San Juan County District Court.
- A or Z number
- A local number form changed as the payment page instructs.
- P prefix
- A letter sometimes needed for parking payment.
- Infraction number
- The number requested on the by-mail court form.
When a transformed number fails, stop guessing and ask District Court to confirm the entry.
How to Find Your Traffic Court Date
Check the date printed on the citation, then confirm the current setting. Find My Court Date asks for Court Name, Last Name, and First Name Initial. A docket can retain an old event after a reset, so read the newest entry and contact District Court before ferry travel.
| Citation Number | Use the infraction number or local form, such as #A#######. |
|---|---|
| Court | San Juan County District Court, including routed Friday Harbor matters |
| Date & Time | The current response or hearing setting |
| Hearing Type | Contested, mitigation, or another setting stated by the court |
| Status | Pending, committed, deferred, defaulted, paid, or dismissed |
The state index updates about once daily and warns that status can be incomplete. Direct court confirmation controls near a deadline.
San Juan Traffic Responses by Mail
The official infraction by-mail form supports a contested or mitigation response. It asks for name, infraction number, hearing date, address, violation date, phone, count numbers, sworn statement, signature, date, and place. The court must receive it no later than the day before the hearing.
A contested statement disputes the infraction. A mitigation statement explains facts relevant to the penalty. The form's IRLJ 3.5 summary says a written-statement decision has no appeal, so the choice has lasting procedural effect.
Pay or Contest a Ticket
San Juan County publishes no single deadline on its payment page. Use the citation or notice. Payment methods include cash, personal check, money order, or cashier's check to District Court. Card payment uses ACI and the Pay My Fine instructions, by web or 800-487-4567, with code 10072 and the case number.
| Paying the Ticket | Contesting the Ticket |
|---|---|
| The court records payment and the resulting disposition. | The court reviews a sworn statement or holds a contested hearing. |
| Use the due date on the citation or notice. | A mailed statement must arrive by the day before the hearing. |
| Pay at the counter, by approved mail methods, or through ACI. | File the official form with San Juan County District Court. |
Missed Traffic Hearing: IRLJ 3.2 calls for judgment and monetary penalties after failure to appear. A set-aside motion needs good cause, and denial leaves the judgment and collections in place.
San Juan Deferred Finding Terms
A local deferred finding holds the result while conditions are met. The San Juan request and order sets a $150 base fee plus $50 for each added violation. The term lasts one year. School or proof may be required within 60 days.
Parking is not eligible. Instructions generally allow one moving and one non-moving deferral in seven years, with restrictions for commercial licenses, commercial vehicles, and vulnerable-user negligent driving. Request it at least seven days before an existing hearing so that setting can be canceled if approved.
A violation during the term can produce a committed finding and report to the Department of Licensing. The court decides eligibility.
Traffic Court Record vs Driving Record
These are two files with two custodians. San Juan County District Court keeps the citation case record. The Washington Department of Licensing keeps the separate state driving record. A court search is not a complete agency record and cannot predict a licensing outcome.
| Court Traffic Record | Driver Record | |
|---|---|---|
| Kept By | San Juan County District Court | Washington Department of Licensing |
| Shows | Citation, response, hearing, judgment, payment, deferral, and orders | Driving events and convictions reported to the agency |
| How to Get It | State search, counter inspection, or District Court request | Request through the Department of Licensing |
San Juan Default Judgment Relief
The District Court set-aside form lets a person state good cause under IRLJ 3.2 and CRLJ 60(b). The judge may grant relief and set a hearing, rule on the papers, set a contested hearing, or deny the motion. Denial leaves the failure to appear outstanding and fines in collections.
The form also shows a $25 fee for one documented dismissal result. Other consequences depend on the infraction and order. Review the actual traffic case instead of assuming every default follows one path.
Copies and Fees
District Court permits free inspection and charges for copies, certification, recordings, and research. Its form and fee page disagree on the plain-copy rate, so ask for the current office quote before payment. Fees are due before release.
| Item | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Counter inspection | No fee | View the public court record |
| Plain copy or scan | $0.15 per page on form | Fee page also lists $0.10, so confirm |
| Certified copy | $5 per document | For clerk authentication |
| Court recording | $20 per CD | Request through District Court |
| Court-record research | $20 per hour | May apply to older searches |
When Traffic Search Shows Nothing
A blank result may mean the San Juan County traffic ticket has not posted, the daily update has not run, the portal is down, or the number was entered in the wrong form. It does not erase the date printed on the citation.
Use the fallback chain: read the notice, try Find My Court Date, call or email District Court, visit the counter, then request the exact record in writing. For Friday Harbor parking, the Town answers rule questions, but District Court confirms the case.
No distinct official photo-enforcement program was found for San Juan County. Do not import a generic camera-ticket procedure into a local case.
For a Friday Harbor parking dispute, the local mitigation form offers requests to reduce the fine, dismiss the ticket, remove it from collections, waive a late fee, or seek another result. The Town has a response and signature block, but the District Court judge makes the decision. The form asks for ticket number, ticket date, current date, complainant, phone, mailing address, a written request, signature, and date. That workflow shows why the enforcement source and the court custodian are not always the same office.
If payment is the choice, the citation number still matters at each channel. Include it with a check or money order, and use the county's exact transformation for ACI. If contest or mitigation is the choice, preserve a copy of the signed statement and proof that District Court received it on time. A payment screen, Town inquiry, and sworn court response each serve a different task in the San Juan County traffic record.
